A Single Mother’s Battle

6th December, 2016

My Mother passed away after her 8 year long battle with cancer in 2013. As a single mother, she also fought many other obstacles which most of us in our entire life time will never endure. Most people may say she lost her battle, but for many others the battle of being a single parent remains. I put together this project to show not only what she went through, but also what the other 2,000,000 single parents in the U.K. are facing. Some of you may question who Lucky Dhillon is? ( Please look at our dedication page to find out more) First and foremost, she was my Mother who in the face of all of life’s challenges, brought my brother and I up single-handedly.

She was a multiple-award winning media personality with a media career spanning more than two decades and, the first radio broadcaster in Europe to broadcast daily live from the prestigious Sri Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) in Amritsar, India. Despite being diagnosed with cancer, she also honoured her commitment to raise funds for the first Gurdwara built in Lahore, Pakistan since 1947. In recognition of her remarkable achievements and contributions to society she personally received an O.B.E by Queen Elizabeth II in 2009, for services to Asian Broadcasting and to the media. An award that is only given to those who have played a significant role within society and are known nationally for their work. This project came to life after a simple thought of how my Mother constantly fought a war to raise her children alone. The aim of warfare is for soldiers to be given a target to destroy. In this image the soldiers are represented as pain, depression, hate, mental torture and many other challenges that a single Mother may face. My Mother left a monumental legacy behind and influenced my life in a profound way. This project is dedicated in honour of her memory. Lucky Dhillon 23.08.1961 - 08.05.2013.
